24 Hour NH3 Emergency Response Training: Comprehensive Training to Safeguard Against NH3 Emergencies

Description: This course is designed to meet the requirements of OSHA’s HAZWOPER regulation for training of emergency response personnel who will respond to leaks or spills of chemicals for the purpose of stopping a leak or spill. It is specifically aimed at ammonia users, but will relate to many other chemicals. It can be tailored to other specific chemicals in your workplace. OSHA requires that all personnel who are expected to respond to spills or leaks must have this training.
Scope: This course covers:
  • The laws and regulations that govern HAZWOPER and other regulations that impact a HAZMAT Team
  • Procedures for handling emergency responses
  • Written emergency response plans
  • Hazards confronting responders
  • Ammonia properties
  • Safety data sheets and terms
  • Health effects of ammonia and other chemicals
  • How to prepare for emergencies
  • How to decontaminate responders and clean up ammonia spills
  • Protective clothing
  • Self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs) and respirators
  • Command and organization
  • Conducting mock scenarios with SCBAs and encapsulating suits
Who should attend: Members of management, engineering, maintenance, refrigeration, safety, production, human resources and security. A good cross section can contribute greatly to the overall effectiveness of any emergency response team.

At the end of day three the attendees will be required to take an examination of 50 question and upon satisfactorily passing, will be awarded a certificate and an emergency responder identification wallet card to be used when responding to actual spills.

3 Day 24 Hour NH3 Emergency Response Course Schedule

Day 1

The 24 hour HAZWOPER course timeline is an estimate of time given for each section of the program.
Instructor will use their expertise and knowledge of the subject matter to adjust the class timeframe as needed.
Course timeline should allow for the classroom discussion and hands-on ratio to be 50% classroom 50% hands-on.
Hands-on to include tabletop exercises and handling of equipment. (breakout sessions)

Starting time 8:00 am and Ending time 4:00 pm.
8:00 am – 8:30 am: Class introductions and course outline.
8:30 am – 9:30 am: Introduction to Hazwoper standards and review ERP
9:30 am – 9:45 am: Class break (Instructor should be approx. halfway through section 1)
9:45 am -10:30 am: Finish section 1
10:30 am -12:00 pm: Start section 2 Incident Command and Organization
12:00 pm -12:30 pm: Lunch break
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm: Finish section 2
1:30 pm – 2:00 pm: Start section 3 Ammonia properties (Cover information through neutralization)
2:00 pm – 2:15 pm: Class break
2:15 pm – 3:00 pm: Finish section 3
3:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Breakout session- tabletop SDS information review. We will break up the class into small groups and have each group review SDS information on a different chemical in their facility. We will also have the group identify all the hazards a hazmat team may encounter and what precautions to take to handle the release safely.
Each group will inform all team members of the hazard information identified in a class presentation.
Instructor may have to finish up presentations on day 2, class ends at 4:00pm.

Day Two

Starting time 8:00 am and Ending time 4:00 pm.
8:00 am – 9:00 am: Breakout session to be completed from end of day one.
9:00 am – 9:15 am: Classroom break
9:15 am – 10:30 am: Start section 4 health hazards
10:30 am – 12:00 pm: Start section 5 respirators
12:00 pm – 12:30 pm: Lunch
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm: Finish section 5 respirators
1:30 pm – 2:30 pm: Review section 6 PPE
2:30 pm – 2:45 pm: Classroom break
2:45 pm – 4:00 pm: Breakout session- Instructor will have group go out to the hazmat equipment trailer or room, practice setting up the cold zone and inspecting equipment. They can also use this time to allow all the responders to dress out in level A suits.
4:00 pm: End of day Two

Day Three

Starting time 8:00 am and Ending time 4:00 pm.
8:00 am – 8:30 am: Review any information and questions from day one and two.
8:30 am – 9:45 am: Start section 7 Sampling (have company bring their samplers in and use them in instruction)
9:45 am – 10:00 am: Class break 9:45 am – 10:30 am Finish section 1
10:00 am – 12:00 pm: Give class test and review answers with students
12:00 pm – 12:30 pm: Lunch break
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm: Go over preplanning and have team start their planning for the afternoon drill
1:30 pm – 3:00 pm: Run afternoon drill with team
3:00 pm – 3:15 pm: Classroom break
3:15 pm – 3:45 pm: Complete response critique
3:45 pm – 4:00 pm: Close out class with questions and answers as well as having students fill out the class evaluations
