AMS Industries served as the mechanical and plumbing contractor for the Hyatt Regency O’Hare boiler and domestic water heater project, working alongside Hyatt and Grumman | Butkus Associates.

The 1,095-room hotel’s existing boiler plant was replaced with nine new 6,000,000 BTU/hr high-efficiency condensing boilers serving both the building heating and domestic hot water systems. The upgraded plant provides 54 MMBTUH of total capacity, improved redundancy, and increased turndown compared to the previous system.

In addition to the boiler replacement, we installed new domestic water heaters, thermostatic mixing valves, piping, pumps with variable frequency drives and high-efficiency motors, DDC temperature controls, and updated electrical gear. These improvements were designed to support reliability, energy efficiency, system monitoring, and long-term maintainability.

A key challenge was completing the work while limiting downtime for the heating water and domestic hot water systems to a four-hour window. Through careful planning, phasing, and equipment layout, the project was completed without the need for a temporary boiler plant, helping keep the project within budget while maintaining critical hotel operations.

The completed system gives the hotel’s operations team improved flexibility, redundancy, access for maintenance, and opportunities for increased efficiency over time.
